Om Yoga Show | Takes you Beyond Expectation

Om Yoga Show Manchester 2014

Firstly a big thank you to https://www.ommagazine.com/ for inviting me to blog about my experiences whilst visiting this amazing show. I'm so pleased the show has made it to  Manchester - long may it continue, we're already committed to attending next year.
http://www.omyogashow.com/manchester/home.php
For those lucky enough you can also catch the Om Yoga Show in London October 2014. http://www.omyogashow.com/london/home.php

OVERVIEW

You can feel the serene atmosphere as you enter the building, yes even arriving at the Om Yoga Show is a calming experience, (unlike the usual trade shows you encounter where people are moaning about the queue as soon as they enter the foyer and pushing you forwards if there's an inch to spare). Even the ushers are full of kindness, it immediately feels like a wonderful place to be. Every hint of rushing is left behind you as you enter this world of vibrancy and happiness.

The great thing about the Om Yoga Show apart from the diversity is that although the scheduled workshops with a fee are worth every penny, there are scheduled open workshops where you can join in for free or spectate.

Fitted with wrist bands my husband and I were all set to welcome whatever lay in store.

There's a lot of information to share with you, so much in fact that it felt right to split it into different pages to make it easier to take in; Here's a summary, please see applicable posts for further details, observations and research links.

Om Yoga Show | Workshop 'Mindfulness ABC - Simple Steps for Busy People with Louise Palmer'

Day 1 Workshop 1 | Mindfulness

Mindfulness ABC Simple Steps for Busy People with Louise Palmer, Founder of Camyoga

 breathe > notice > be

This was the perfect way to start the day. Louise Palmer had a life of various roles with Yoga in the background and then as she grew Yoga took over becoming her main focus. She founded Camyoga and works with Transformational Breathing, Yoga Barre and  Mindfulness.

Mindfulness is born from Buddhist tradition, it is the art of being present, accepting, none judgment and none attachment. John Kabbatt Zinn is referenced as the person who transformed this Buddhist practice into understandable digestible chunks for all to ingest in our modern world. Louise explained how we get stuck in a groove in our life and the longer we continue in that groove the further we become entrenched, we need intervention we need mindfulness to help us get out, we need to;

stop > observe > proceed

Otherwise we simply dig ourselves deeper and deeper into that very same groove. Just think about your daily routine, how blinkered are you when you are in this invisible daily groove? For example do you remember washing your face, were you actually present when you ate your breakfast, where was your mind when you were getting dressed, do you think you noticed your journey to work and how much of your day do you consciously experience? Do you often have knee jerk reactions taking everything personally? Mindful intervention can help you learn to pause before responding hastily and therefore you respond from a much calmer place and with interest to what has been said. Consider this situation; if someone says something to you about you that you don't like, rather than offering a knee jerk reaction, don't take it personally but pause and react calmly wondering why they have said that to you. We as a species project ourselves onto others, so what people are saying about you is actually about themselves and it works both ways of course so for example next time you give someone some advice, just notice that the advice you are giving is actually for yourself! Mind blowing isn't it, really makes you consider a new perspective.

Louise went on to highlight how we should set an intention each day, be it for short or long term achievement, it could be something we need to achieve or a behavior we wish to convey for example; today I will be kind in all my actions, I will listen to my bodies needs, I will forgive etc. This intention brings focus and can help reduce our 'should' lists that breed guilt within us and resentment of others. We were reminded that we live in a society where doing right brings praise, we forget it is absolutely fine to make mistakes yet interestingly the most common thread between highly successful people is that they openly admit they don't know everything and are not afraid to make mistakes, we do after all learn from our mistakes.

"You lose if you argue with reality, only 100% of the time"
(Byron Katie)

Being mindful means you are living in the moment, not judging but experiencing the present moment. When we become judgmental we raise our emotions and expectations we enter into 'fight or flight', this is a primal state from our caveman days designed to protect us when feeling threatened/frightened, it gets us ready to flee, our resources become limited, our digestion shuts down and our adrenalin kicks into action as we prepare to defend ourselves or escape. This primal response is proven to be calmed by bringing your attention to your breath. When you are in a stressful situation or indeed know you are going to be entering one remember to breathe...its your saving grace, it is always with you from the moment you are born, it always brings you back to your true self, to calmness.

The really brilliant thing is that it takes seconds to breath and you can spare a few seconds or even minutes every single day. If you have been breathing shallow for some time taking full breaths can make you a little light headed, do not worry this is normal as your oxygen intake increases and the feeling will soon pass.

Breathing Techniques
These can be practiced sitting upright, lying or standing. It can help to guide your breath if you rest one hand below your naval and think about breathing in from your tail bone all the way up to your collar bones. Gently letting the breath go as you exhale. Your mind focuses on following the breath and counting the duration of each stage of the breath.
1 Breath Count
Inhale from tailbone upwards for 4 seconds > retain 4 seconds > exhale 4 seconds >  breath 4 second

4 Breaths Counts

Inhale from tailbone upwards for 4 seconds > retain 4 seconds > exhale 4 seconds >  breath 4 seconds
Repeat 4 times

Intervention Toolkit
To get you out of your groove and prevent being triggered into reaction
  • single present focus; 1 thing at a time
  • pure perception; none judgmental
  • beginners mind; treat even repetitive things as if they are brand new
  • mindful breath; imagine breathing from your tailbone upwards
  • anchor your body in the present; ground through your feet/body with the ground/floor
  • following your breath; counting silently as you follow your breath cycle
It's easy to find opportunities and reminders to apply mindful breathing in every day situations
  • 1 breath
When the phone rings, when the traffic lights are on red, before texting, before driving, before a meeting
  • 4 Breaths
When the alarm goes off and you hit snooze, before eating, before sleeping

Om Yoga Show | Workshop 'Lessen the Hold of Anxiety with Yoga Therapist Lisa Kaley-Isley'

Day 1 Workshop 2 |  Anxiety

Lessen the Hold of Anxiety with Yoga Therapist Lisa Kaley-Isley, Life Tree Yoga

This workshop focused on reducing our SAD's;
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
Lisa talked about being mindful in your Yoga practice, tuning in and noticing what type of Yoga is right for you and when it is right for you. All to often we compete in this world, Lisa encourages a change of approach, being kind to yourself through your Yoga practice. This practice of mindful movement will help to be kind to your self, to practice gently and reduce your SADs.

We all know breath is important, it's what keeps us alive. But consider this, just how alive are we when we are suffering any one or all of the SADs? Short shallow breathing is present and this is feeding the SADs. Take a moment, take a few seconds right now and just breathe; breathe slowly and smoothly with both your inhalation and exhalation. Feel yourself begin to relax...

We all think we haven't got time to breathe properly but it takes seconds and It has been proven that consciously breathing boosts your immune system whilst improving your digestion and physiology.

Lisa guides us to find peace within whilst practicing mindful Yoga. Lisa also teaches us that whatever we are thinking has the same physiological effect within us as if we were actually doing whatever that thought is. The same chemical reaction takes place, for example if you think about one of your favourite things to eat your mouth starts watering, equally if you think you are in danger your body reacts as though it is - it tenses and tightens, your fight or flight reflex has been activated, your sympathetic nervous system has sprung into action. Women especially in this instance can tend to freeze, it's time to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and focus on breathing to introduce a sense of calm again.

Lisa takes you through a sequence of Asana's that move every part of your body reminding you to listen to your body and treat it gently in your practice. You are encouraged to begin the workshop with a breath count of 4 and aim to lengthen this count through this practice as you open your body to create more space and calm yourself to breathe fully. You will feel lighter and calmer leaving this session than when you entered.

The Bhagavad Gita was referred too and as with the meaning found in the book we were encouraged to 'stand up' for ourselves and for what is right in life. Navarati was also referenced.

Navarati
Is an Indian festival celebrated over 9 nights and devoted to the Divine Mother. This festival celebrates the triumph of good over evil and encourages the removal of all negatives, to purify the mind and cultivate positivity from within.

Lisa then reads a poem to the group which ends with these significant words of comfort;

"Never be afraid...I've always got your back"

We are then given a healing mantra which is said to grow in strength each time it is shared, so please pass this on...

From the Devi Mahatymyam
Sarva Swarupe Sarveshe Sarva Shakti Samanvite
Bhaye Bhyastra Himo Devi Durge Devi

Translation
O Divine Mother, everyone and everything is your manifestation.
All forces, physical and spiritual are under your command.

Om Yoga Show | Midland Hotel

Peaceful Midland hotel

Midland Hotel Manchester
We stayed overnight at the serene and very convenient Midland Hotel, it's literally just across the road from the show. It's a 4 star hotel with a wonderful ambiance and yet you can still grab a bargain as we discovered by going direct to the hotel website. OK perhaps a little extravagant being 4 star but for convenience and setting it really was value for money, a perfect place to stay to enrich the whole experience of visiting the Om Yoga Show.

Other Yogi's were staying too, you can so easily spot a Yogi - they drift through the foyer calmly and do so to the background of a pianist during the evening. Friendly and attentive staff are on hand to ensure you enjoy your stay. There is a spa with a small pool, jacuzzi and male/female sauna's available in the corresponding changing rooms, offering a chance for impromptu meetings with other Yogi's in a relaxed setting. I had the pleasure of meeting Morag Wilson http://www.kindofmagick.co.uk/tutors-morag-wilson.html a Yoga Teacher from Scotland. A lovely calm lady and I wish her every happiness in her journey.

There is also a fully equipped gym should you feel the urge to work out.

If you feel you deserve something special (and I think we all do sometimes) this could be the hotel for you.

Om Yoga Show | Workshop 'Whats IN the Way IS the Way with Mike George'

Day 2 Workshop 1 |  Meditation

Whats IN the Way IS the Way with Mike George

An incredibly simple yet also complex statement, and as we sat through this informative workshop we were guided to realise why. This statement is a question you should be asking yourself frequently.

As we entered the room Mike George spiritual teacher, author and motivational speaker was tucked away in the corner at the back of the room sitting on the floor, smiling, resting his back against the wall. I'm guessing a lot of people entered the room without actually noticing he was there. All other workshops we entered saw the leader making themselves known, standing front and center, welcoming clients in. Mike was different, he was taking a much more subtle approach, watching people entering whilst sitting quietly in the back. I spoke to Mike as we passed him - (I recognised his picture from the show brochure) - I said thank you to him in advance and proceeded to find a seat.

Attendees gently wandered in, choosing there space to sit whilst Mike calmly waited at the back of the room until everyone had settled in. He then comes and sits at the front of the room and begins to speak, you can sense his calmness, it feels deep. This workshop was designed to take us through emotional healing describing how we can use meditation and contemplation to heal our own emotions.

Mike talked to us of Raja Yoga where Raja means Royal and Yoga means Union – so Raja Yoga is the highest path to a re-union with the source, with the divine. But first we have to prepare our self by learning how to meditate.

The workshop is informal, interaction and questions are encouraged throughout. Mike tells us of how he previously led a very stressful life which eventually brought him to question himself and led him to where he is now; no longer stressed, a student of the school of life, which is essentially our own consciousness, and the author of over 10 books.

Mike talks about how hatha yoga tends to focus on physical postures while raja yoga focuses on the posture and alignment of the energy of our consciousness.  Hence the practice of meditation. He tells us how we are ultimately our own guide and navigator in this life.  He talks of the importance of restoring our true self-awareness as this is what we have lost and this is the cause of all our stress and suffering.

He reminds us that the one thing we are not taught is self-understanding and that this is essential if we are to manage our self i.e. our thoughts, emotions and attitudes, in the context of our relationships.  When we can begin to understand ourselves this enables us to deal with everything else. It means we can learn in and from the REAL school the school of LIFE. Mike also highlights the importance of ‘unlearning’ as that is necessary to free our self from the illusions and misperceptions that are the cause of our stress and unhappiness.

Mike teaches us how perception itself is an act of creation, how we bring someone into our own minds (perceive) is how we create them to be. This then leads to projection of our self onto them. If we perceive/create them in a loving way we project that quality of energy back to them.  Similarly if we perceive/create them in a hateful way.  If there are things you have decided that you don't like about someone your belief/opinion of them will shape your perception and you project that back onto them. Meditation helps us to open our eye and hearts to be mindful of this taking place within our consciousness.

Marketing companies project onto us all the time.  They feed us ideas and images, encouraging us to lose our sense of identity in their projection. This then influences our perceptions and the energy we project onto others and the world.  What we project bounces back to us, so if we project love onto a person that tends to be what we get back, and the same for all our emotions. It is really important to remain mindful of our actions and our reactions; they affect us as well as others. Having been unconsciously bombarded by others perceptions we need to truly get to know ourselves again.

Contemplate these;

"How do I know what I know,

until I hear what I have to say,

I cannot know what I have until I give it away."

Ask yourself, how often do you actually tune in and listen to your true self, not the myriad of thoughts and reactions running around in your head each day, but your true self, how often do you listen to you?

Have you ever sat talking with friends and suddenly come out with a really insightful comment? This is a moment where you have connected with your inner wisdom, some call this intuition, but in fact you have listened to you. It's only when saying something that you didn't know you knew and hearing yourself say it that you can realise you know it! This inner wisdom is always there to guide us but often we don't hear it as it is drowned out by all our other racing thoughts. It's so important to make time each day to meditate, contemplate, reflect, to relax our minds and connect with our inner guide to discover what we know.

Mike encourages us to write something everyday, be it in a journal or in one of our many digital devices, just write something everyday that comes from within, from your innate wisdom, keep connecting.

So What IS in the Way?

Well firstly our racing thoughts are, but through meditation you can discover what IS in the way in your life, what is blocking you. Many people experience light bulb moments through meditation as they discover what's in the way for them, which is usually what they are attached too in this life. What’s most important is when you have a light bulb moment you must act on it, otherwise you miss the opportunity to change.

We live in an amazing world but its technological advances also mean we expect things instantly. We are agitated, time conscious, living a life full of things we 'should' be doing. Regular meditation can help dismiss the 'should' list and bring patience within but we cannot expect anything from it, we have to wait for guidance from within and some will need to wait a lot longer than others.

Mike then lead us through a short meditation to bring us all to a calm and centered place.

3 Steps to Meditation

•   Relaxation

•   Concentration

•   Meditation

Being relaxed in mind and body, feeling settled, will aid concentration and this will nurture meditation. If you happen to become drowsy whilst relaxing with the aim of meditating this is fine just go with it, if you happen to nod off this is absolutely fine don't fight it, but remember that when you wake from this dozing state that's the perfect time to meditate. Don't try to stop your thoughts but equally let them go, just notice them, don't engage with them, let them drift off like a bubble into the sky as you yourself drift towards silence. Meditation leads us to inner peace and with practice we can recall this sense of calm in our daily lives, for example when someone is really pushing our buttons we can project calm to them by reacting without anger this will then bounce back to us avoiding the mutual exchange of anger, bringing balance to the situation.

Life is the interplay of two energies that we often acknowledge in our conversations with each other:

Human + Being

Form + Consciousness

Matter + Mind

Body + Soul

One is physical energy and the other is non-physical often referred to as spiritual energy – the energy of spirit.

Meditation helps us to realise this and know that we are spirit and not form. The longer you stay in meditation the deeper your awareness of being your authentic self will be.  It’s here you will find the contentment that is deepest happiness, free from desire and overpowering emotions such as anger, sadness or fear, which all have their roots in attachment. Meditation starts with detached observation of your thoughts and feelings, which is when they lose their power to disturb you.

Social well-being

Mike reminded us to be careful who you surround yourself with, colleagues, friends. He recommended consciously finding others with a similar inclination to encourage us wake up to our innate spiritual nature. Be mindful of what you expose yourself too as we are coloured by the company of others. If you surround yourself with a certain mentality you become that mentality. If you overload on TV Drama you will be sucked into expecting disproportionate reactions in your life too. You need to keep your mind happy, move towards people and events that resonate with you as much as possible.

Attachment and Emotion

What am I attached to that is shaping my sense of identity? What emotions do I feel frequently for they are signals indicating a false sense of identity?   Asking yourself these sorts of questions will help generate insights and answers to help you live a more content life. Take the opinion you have of yourself when you get up from a nights sleep for example, we all form an opinion of our self each and every morning. One of the first things we all do is look in the bathroom mirror, what do we see? A tired face, this springs doubt in our mind we do this repeatedly every morning, noticing the ageing process as we spot yet another wrinkle or the lines under our eyes seem darker. We mistakenly identify ourselves with our body so it’s as if we witness our own decline, with the tendency to feel more and more down about our appearance. Meditation helps you to realise you are not your appearance but the animating energy of your body and that you never age or decay as your true self. The body is just the vehicle you inhabit at this time, yes it's ageing but it’s designed to do so, you need to remember it is not you, it is not your true self. We spend a lot of time and energy looking after our external body, and some of us the internal matter too, but how about remembering to nurture your mind, not just your fleshy mind but your psychic mind, your very spirit, as this is you, your driving force, your truest connection to the divine self and we should nurture it daily with meditation.

Mike explained how our emotions arise using an example of a scratched car incident. The car is your car and someone else purposefully scratches it. Most of us would call up anger as a natural reaction to having our car deliberately scratched but in fact it’s our attachment to the car that causes our anger.  He explained exactly how the ego, the false sense of self, is created in our minds when we identify with what we become attached to. This he explained is actually the root cause of all our stress and suffering. We become our attachments so anger is born from a case of mistaken identity as we ourselves in this scenario became the car. This is not saying that damaging someone’s property is right, but it's showing us where our emotions come from. It is our emotions and our belief that they are caused by others that ensure we condemn others rather than understand them.  But we alone are responsible for our actions and how we feel.  Only when we realise this fully can we learn to respond rather than react, act with grace and consideration rather than blame and condemnation.

The workshop ended with a second meditation where I connected with my inner self, I received 3 strong individual messages, the clarity of voice honestly startled me, I wasn't expecting anything;

•   I'm very scared

•   I need to heal

•   You can do it

Light Bulb Moment

I couldn't hold back the tears, sitting there with my eyes closed, trying not to cry out loud the tears ran gently down my face. I thought this may be a light bulb moment, but that was yet to come. These 3 clear messages are all very poignant as I am currently recovering from a serious road traffic injury received whilst cycling in August 2012, the incident left me hospitalised initially through the physical injuries sustained and shortly afterwards I was diagnosed with severe PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). I am undergoing extensive rehabilitation and am currently unable to work due to the physical and psychological injuries I sustained. These messages were truly heartfelt and very clear, I could visualise just how emotionally hurt I was, this is where the tears came from and later in a brief conversation with Mike George he advised that I was attached to being fully recovered and on the other side of all this, this was adding to my emotional state. This was my light-bulb moment to help alleviate the emotional grief I have been suffering from being so physically fit and healthy prior to the incident, to wanting my life back on track. I actually need to focus on the clear messages I received during meditation, I need to learn to accept where I am right now and let go of the attachment to the desire to heal in order to do just that. I am very thankful for Mikes wise words they helped me to realise I can try to find my way by beginning to heal before even thinking about moving on.

At the end of each day...

Learn to re-run your day in your head, seek out your attachments, and identify what is IN your way. Your attachments become your identity, which is always a false identity and that is what’s IN the way, that’s the obstacle.  Use meditation, contemplation, reflection to ‘notice’ what you are putting IN your own way...

Om Yoga Show | Sun Power Yoga Open Workshop

Watching the Power at work

Anne-Marie Newland took this workshop with presence, grace and poise as she welcomed and instructed a bursting Sun Power Yoga Open Workshop. We took in this radiant class from the sidelines as spectators. Anne-Marie guided each participant seamlessly through a series of asanas.

Sun Power Yoga is a blend of of Ashtanga, Sivananda & Iyengar with dynamic Hatha. From experience I can honestly say that a single session can leave you more satisfied than any other form of Yoga or indeed various other forms of physical activity.

All the time I could here my teachers voice in my head, that foots out of line, they need to soften their shoulders, their heads in the wrong place, that leg could go higher, even my husband was pointing things out from the days when I was practicing my teaching skills on him. Anne-Marie of course didn't miss any opportunity for adjustment, with her keen eyes she frequently stepped into the packed session for hands on adjustments helping each attendee get the most from their practice. She demonstrated each pose with accuracy, giving clear instruction and adding a touch of humour to the session, it was a pleasure to watch.

Om Yoga Show | Dru Dance Yoga Open Stage

Are you Passionate about Yoga & Dance?

If you answered yes then Dru Dance could be for you! I love Yoga and Dance so we made sure we managed to see some parts of the Dru Dance on the Open Stage.

In the snap shot above the instructor was talking about fixing your goal and drawing back your bow to aim for it with 'Archer' pose, she continued to encourage those taking part to imagine reaching their goal as they let their imaginary spears go...

It is a fusion of yoga and dance which are choreographed to specific music. It relieves stress and combines a flow of movement that is designed to enhance flexibility, strength and muscle tone. It will also improve your balance which in turn improves your concentration.

People who try this say they leave the session feeling strong and graceful.

Om Yoga Show | Lotus Crafts

Zafu & Zabuton
http://www.lotuscrafts.eu/
Now I think we all know the pros and cons of buckwheat hulls versus cotton filled Zafu (raised meditation cushion)? We don't OK well as I understand it Buckwheat Hulls make for a slightly heavier product and a firmer seat, whereas cotton is a little lighter and provides a softer seat - both support your seated meditation pose and both mold to the shape of your buttocks, so it's really down to personal preference in the firmness of your seated requirements. I use a Buckwheat Hulls crescent shaped Zafu. I would recommend you seek out a Zafu with a removable cover for ease of washing and an incorporated for transporting your Zafu around.

When it comes to Zabuton (the large flat rectangular or square cushion that sits below your raised meditation cushion) I learned something new from the Lotus Crafts company. Kapok is not so easily available therefore it is more costly. Cotton does the same thing and is more readily available, so if you are going to purchase a Zabuton then cotton seems to be the environmentally friendlier choice.

Check out Lotus Crafts for a wonderful range of Zafu and Zabuton. They are reasonably priced and they stock some great colours too.

Om Yoga Show | Sahaja Yoga Trial Session

Thoughtless Awareness...

www.sahajayoga.org.uk

Sahaja Yoga is a registered UK charity offering free meditation and stress management across the UK. The meditation technique used was developed by Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi the founder of Sahaja Yoga.

We were looking at information about Sahaja Yoga when someone gently approached us to explain that Sahaja Yoga was a meditation practice focusing on the subtle body to awaken the Kundalini energy held within us.

Practicing this meditation awakens the sacred spiritual Kundalini energy lying dormant in the sacrum of us all. The very word 'Sacrum' comes from the word 'Sacred' which would suggest there is ancient knowledge of this energies existence.

Sahaja Yoga translates to mean 'born with you' or 'spontaneous' and Yoga means 'union with the divine'. These elements brought together encourage a journey of inner connection guiding you to self realisation.

When Kundalini energy is awakened it travels from the base of the spine upwards along the subtle body channel known as 'Sushumna'. It flows and removes blockages ultimately reaching outwards through the top of the head. It is possible to feel the flow of Kundalini energy in your hands during Sahaja Yoga practice. This experience can be scientifically proven as it is actually experienced in the central nervous system.

We were invited to have a trial I agreed admittedly with a little hesitation and my husband decided not to take part at this point. I was not told what to expect which was beneficial as I had no expectations. I was invited to relax sitting on a chair with an upright spine and my eyes closed. I was then worked on by an an experienced Sahaja Yoga practitioner of some 26yrs who worked on my chakras without physical contact whilst standing behind me.

I genuinely experienced different sensations in my body throughout the session some of which continued afterwards. As I opened my eyes my husband was also having a trial and I know he is glad he did so. I have chosen not to go into further detail as I feel everyone's experience should be theirs alone but I can honestly say having trialled this that everyone should try it. There are sessions held weekly across the UK and you can find out where your nearest one is on the website link found below.

Sahaja Yoga meditation teaches us;

"Truth is what it is, you can not change it,
you can not ignore it, you have to remain open minded
and in conscious awareness."

Sahaja Yoga is practiced to help you become present, to connect to your truth, to awaken connection to our inner energy.
